Introduction

I first encountered this Teentaal chalan in my formative years while listening to my Guru, the legendary Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, unfold it in performance. The meters and resonance of Guruji left no scope for further enhancement. The way the bols flowed - poised yet deeply resonant - left me completely mesmerised. Over time, hearing the same chalan interpreted by Ustad Zakir Hussain only deepened that impression, each rendition revealing new layers of balance and imagination. Historically, this chalan is associated with the legacy of Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakwa, the Mount Everest of Tabla, whose early recordings played a key role in shaping and popularising such expansive Farukhabad-style compositions. What makes this chalan special is how it feels complete - structured yet lyrical - inviting the listener to travel effortlessly through its Theme and Paltas as one continuous rhythmic narrative.

Dhriti Gobinda Dutta with Pandit Anindo Chatterjee on the stage,

Below is the complete presentation of the Teentaal Chalan as a flowing composition - unfolding through its Theme, Bals (Paltas), and Tihai. The development presented here reflects my own understanding and approach to this Chalan, offered as a foundational framework rather than an exhaustive blueprint. Like all living traditions, it invites each practitioner to explore, expand, and evolve the material gradually, according to their own training, riyaz, sensibility and maturity.
